Let’s face it, some of us are taking isolation extremely well and others… well, we’re not.
There are people taking advantage of all the extra free time by learning 12 new hobbies, reading 14 books, and doing tons of self-development during the stay at home orders. Then there’s those of us who binge tons of Netflix, drink (a-lot) more wine than normal, and have a hard time staying motivated for normal everyday responsibilities. For some of you, it may even be a victory to just get up and out of bed for the day.
Regardless of where you fall on this spectrum, here are our favorite daily habits that help us keep our stride during isolation:
- Shower! Personal Hygiene is a must and it helps to reset and feel refreshed. Even if you are just showering to go Netflix binge, try to keep up your usual healthy habits as much as possible.
- Maintain some structure. Try to keep somewhat of a routine. This will help you, especially once the stay-at-home orders start to lift.
- Stay hydrated! I have noticed that I drink much more coffee than usual working from home. Remember to drink water regularly. You need it mentally and physically to stay healthy.
- Reach out to friends or family. Facetime or call someone that is outside of your household. It’s always good to check in with others to see how they are doing. Plus it’s always good to get outside of your own head for a bit during social isolation. We are social beings (even if you are a complete introvert) and we are made to live in connection with other people.
- Keep moving. Do something to get your heart rate up and endorphins flowing. Whether it’s a walk, home workout, sit-ups, just do something to keep yourself moving. I recently started running again and it’s totally been the highlight of my isolation and helps fight off pesky, anxious thoughts.
- Find joy. Always look for something to laugh about and try to limit negative media consumption. My boyfriend and I recently scheduled a stand-up comedy movie date night, it was so simple yet tons of fun. Try to be creative in finding joy during your day. I have also limited the negative news that I am reading. I read enough to be informed but not so much that I live in a constant state of anxiety. Avoid the information overload and be intentional with the information you consume.
- Be Still. Take some time to meditate or pray. Set aside time to clear your mind and take the focus off your worries. Don’t let this feel like a chore but like a refreshing habit that helps you stay grounded during crazy times.
Whether you are that over-achiever who wants to learn a new language or you want to take advantage of all this free time by bingeing Netflix or playing video games, remember to give yourself and others grace during this craziness. This is an unprecedented crisis, you don’t need to feel guilty for not being a rockstar and we also don’t need to shame others for not doing “more” with their time. However, remember to incorporate some of your own healthy habits into your day to day life. This will set you up for success when this is all over, because this too shall pass.
