Character and integrity are qualities that we most want in the people we are in a relationship with, whether our co-workers, friends, family, bosses or significant others.
Do we have that same expectation of ourselves?
Are we treating others how we want to be treated? Are we working to change our own attitudes and making the effort to do the right thing in our own lives?
Or do we find our first instinct to be self-serving, living in offense, seeking power & control, and overall have a self-focused mentality?
We all struggle at some point with that. It takes intentionality and humility to make the shift from operating out of our ego into being more concerned with others.
It seems counterintuitive for getting ahead, but it is truly the best way to live and lead. If you want to influence others it starts with being a great servant. There are many well-known people that are advocates for servant leadership like Martin Luther King, Winston Churchill, and Abraham Lincoln. Regardless if you want to make a big impact like those leaders or overall have better relationships, serving others is a great way to start.
Instead of living self-focused, look for an opportunity to serve those close to you. Share power & control to drive engagement instead of trying to gain it for yourself. Instead of speaking to be heard, let’s try to listen. Do the right thing even when nobody is looking. Having integrity and serving others will help us have better relationships personally and professionally.
